In 2019 he was bestowed an Doctor Honoris Causa in Infrared Thermography from University of Antwerp (Belgium).
Title of the talk is:
Dynamic Thermography Inspection of Structures using a Drone Based Approach: Review and Case studies
Short abstract:
In this talk the basic principles of dynamic thermography inspection of structures using drone will be discussed including benefits, challenges, case studies.
Case of aircrafts: Recent aircrafts incorporate and high content of composite materials such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) used in wings, fuselage, etc.
Such material require proper inspection to detect and assess severity of embedded defects present at manufacturing stages such as porosities and in-service defects (delaminations and disbonds)..
Since surfaces to inspect are large and time for inspection should be limited as much as possible, quick inspection schemes are preferred.
Other applications: Many other fields could benefit from drone inspection, for instance civil engineering in the case of large structures sometimes difficult and dangerous to reach.
In this talk, we present the well-known concepts of infrared thermography deployed in a dynamic scheme. Interestingly, adding visible channel could sometimes benefit the inspection with proper data fusion.
Drone inspection concepts are also discussed along approaches for thermogram processing based on deep learning.
Finally, a flying demonstrator is shown as well.
